  • Hi Buck,
I just finished reading your book “Fortress of Bears” – really great: how you describe your surroundings and your daily routines of gathering food and such.
I also like your style of writing and the “philosophical aspects” of such an adventure as described by you.
Your book reminded me a lot of a kayaking trip on Vancouver Island and the atmosphere along the coastline of Kenai Peninsula/Alaska which I both visited once.

Thanks for sharing your adventure in such a way!
Same with your Alaska Crossing – DVD!

Both give a great and authentic insight in Alaskan nature and Alaskan outdoor live, I think.

    • Thank you Joerg! I’m glad you enjoyed Fortress of the Bears and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

I’m sure many of your experiences on Vancouver Island and along the Kenai came to mind. There are a lot of beautiful, wild places still to be experienced, none more beautiful than Alaska.

Thanks again, and I hope you enjoy many more adventures of your own.

  • Hi Buck,

I would like to order “Alone in the Fortress of the Bears” and “Alone Across Alaska DVD”, but I live in Germany. Which costs do apply? Is it technically possible to play your DVD on european laptops/TV’s?

I have been hiking in Alaska once and I think about doing a solo trip in the Brooks Range. What are the greatest dangers in your opinion: first: hypothermia, second: drowning, third: bears? I have been to bear country several times but still it is weird to me since I live in more or less “tame” europe…

    Great website, best regards,

    Joerg/Germany

    • Hi Joerg,

These DVDs are “Region 0” so they should play in Germany and the rest of Europe just fine. I will email you with the shipping costs.

I think the greatest dangers in the summer/fall include drowning, flying, falls, other injuries and sickness, and hypothermia. All are more of a risk than bears. I’ve been in Alaska for about 35 years now and I don’t know anyone killed by a bear. I don’t think I know anyone that knows anyone that has.

      Have a fun, safe hike!

      Buck
