  • I have done a lot wilderness adventures in the past, including a 45 day canoe trip in Northern Quebec, eventually down the Rupert River to James Bay. Some winter climbs in Northern New England. But nothing like the extended and solo adventures you have done. I just finished reading Alone in the Fortress of Bears. GREAT BOOK!!! I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it. I am amazed at how much you enjoyed your wilderness diet, and also that you didn’t get lonely. I have only been solo backpacking once, and must confess to getting lonely. So I envy your ability to enjoy solitude without regret.
Your descriptive and writing abilities are superb – I wish you would write a book on your Alaska traverse.
In closing, many thanks for sharing your wonderful wilderness experience.

    • Hi Alan,

That canoe trip in Northern Quebec must have been awesome! I’ve never been in that area. Bet there’s some wild country.

Really glad you enjoyed Alone in the Fortress of the Bears. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know! A brief review on Amazon is always helpful. No obligation of course.

Thanks again for the kind words. Best of luck on your own adventures.

  • I grew up on 2/1/2 acres in okla surrounded by the osage hills and woods. as a result i hiked alot young and though i’ve been a city person through my career i now yearn to go back to the fields and woods and hills/mountains.

I currently volunteer at Ghost Ranch nmexico and the more i live in civilization the more i want to get out of it. i might mention i also owned and ran a B*B in Pa.for 7 years on 5 acres.
I love New Mexico and aftr my stint here would love to find a small cabin (2 bedroom) in nm near the continental divide after having so enjoyed the backpackers that came from Canada this a.m. to Ghost RAnch.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    and merci.

    • Hi Claire,

That sounds like some fine country you grew up in.

That is so interesting that you volunteer at Ghost Ranch. Another magical place!

Are you thinking of a place along the continental divide to set up a hiker hostel, or just to meet hikers, to hike the trail yourself, or some combination? I really like New Mexico regardless.

If it were me I’d just start studying maps, think about what my priorities are, then go from there.

      Buck
