Dear Bruce,
Thank you for your Yellowstone River trip report! I enjoyed reading about your journey down the Yellowstone and appreciated your description of Yankee Jim Canyon.
I am part of a small group planning a multi-week whitewater canoe trip this September. We are considering paddling the Yellowstone River from Gardiner, MT, to Fort Buford, ND. Do you have any recommendations on handling the logistics of getting from the take-out to the put-in (i.e., car shuttle)? And is there anything you learned during your trip on the Yellowstone that you wish you’d known before going?

Hi Emma, Glad you found it helpful. I used a combo of a ride from a friend, a short hitch, then a bus ride back to near the start. If I was part of a group I’d probably look first into two vehicles leaving one in a secure spot at each end. Or some combo of all those options including shuttle services.
I didn’t encounter many big surprises. You can camp below high water mark anywhere it’s safe in Montana. I found the Gaia GPS app super useful with at least Public Lands and Topo maps downloaded. Good luck!
